The Shark, the Squid and Ourselves

The shark is a symbol of nature’s warrior, striving and fighting to awaken our inner instinct, which is in constant battle and interaction with the squid — the symbol for intelligence and communication.

My work is meant to demonstrate the effects that modern technology has on nature and how humans act as an instrument at times to try to improve nature and the organic with inorganic materials and devices. The shark is a symbol of our inner instinct and the awareness of the importance of preserving our natural environment and niches. The squid, acts as a symbol of a reconnection with nature through our advancement in technology. Yet, with the expansion of technology, it has become so easy to rely on it and to grow separate from nature. There is a beauty that lies within nature that cannot be replicated though any form of advanced machinery. There is no manmade technique or new idea that can replace instinct. Instinct is our direct line with nature, which we try so hard to block and avoid with structured norms and mannerisms. Both the shark and the squid represent the struggles within ourselves, and the connections we have to nature and technology.

However, what would come of our own ingrained human nature if pure animal instinct took over? Or if mechanics and technology begin to not only replace how we interact and perceive nature, but to replace and omit it completely? These paintings are meant to fantasize on the outcomes and to demonstrate the results and possibilities imagined to happen through this growth and these interactions between the shark, squid and ourselves.
